What I find interesting is the use of the creatures in popular culture still today, many mystic animals such as the Basilisk or pheonix are still in using in video games, tv and other forms of media

Good point. I also find that really interesting. Not only has much of the understanding of the animals changed over the years, the interesting part is that some has stayed the same!!! Like you said the phoenix and such is interesting because it always has been a mystical animal, yet it still remains such, even after we have gained so much knowledge since medevial times.
